Hope, Progress, and a Path Forward: End of Year Letter

My name is Alexis Hernandez-Hons. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a proud mom of two amazing boys—both intelligent, creative, and hilarious—one of whom is Autistic. For me, Institute for Exceptional Care (IEC) is more than an organization; it’s a mission that touches my heart and drives my work.

Years ago, I worked alongside Mai Pham, now President and CEO of IEC, while leading an autism program. I witnessed firsthand the challenges autistic children and adults face in accessing high-quality care. When I volunteered for IEC’s Core Team for the IIDDEAL Project, I was reminded how complex these issues are for the IDD community, but I also saw something else: hope, progress, and a path forward to a healthcare system that values the unique needs of those with IDD.

At IEC, we don’t just talk about change, we make it happen. One issue close to my heart is recognizing the lack of training mental health providers receive in working with the IDD community. That gap harms individuals and families. Inspired by my work with IEC, I am developing and delivering a training on Neuro-Affirming care for mental health professionals, alongside a co-worker who is also a self-advocate. Together, we aim to spark meaningful change.

For me, this work is personal. I think every day about the healthcare system I want for my son—a system that sees him, values him, and supports him. IEC is helping to create a system that genuinely values the voices of those with lived IDD experience, and I’m humbled and inspired to be a part of that effort.

I invite you to join me in supporting IEC. Your gift helps make this vision possible—for my son, for your loved ones, and for so many families across the country. Together, we can transform healthcare for people with IDD. Thank you for your support.

In gratitude,

Alexis Hernandez-Hons, PsyD, LMFT
